Abstract

In this article, the investigators show that the gut microbiota in leptin-deficient obese (ob/ob) mice are more effective at releasing calories from food during digestion than are the microbiota from nonmutant, lean littermates. This trait is transmissible to germ-free recipients, resulting in greater fat deposition.
