Abstract
The case study of the Celtic Ross Hotel explores the dynamic journey of a second-generation family business transitioning from a follower to a leader in sustainability within the Irish hospitality industry. Facing multifaceted challenges, including inflationary pressures, a cost-of-living crisis, and rising operational costs, Managing Director Helen Wycherley and her team grapple with balancing financial stability and sustainable initiatives. This study delves into the hotel’s strategic implementation of sustainable operational efficiencies, investment in eco-friendly technologies, and robust environmental policies, alongside active participation in national initiatives like the Fifty Shades Greener programme. Despite the economic turmoil exacerbated by the VAT increase and predicted employment cost rises, the hotel’s commitment to fostering a positive working culture, enhancing community integration, and maintaining a competitive edge through local collaboration and high-quality produce remains unwavering. The case highlights the significance of innovative approaches in securing the triple bottom line, ensuring business longevity, and upholding the family legacy.
