Harnessing tidal currents in an estuary: A comparative impact assessment between different turbine configurations

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingsChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The impacts on the estuarine circulation in a Spanish estuary, Ria de Ortigueira, caused by two tidal stream plants were analysed in this work. For this purpose a state-of-the-art numerical model, Delft3d-FLOW was implemented and validated. The numerical results showed that the impacts caused by both considered tidal stream plants on the general circulations of the estuary are quite similar. In both cases the impacts on the flow in the whole ria are not very large but alterations of a few centimetres can be seen several km away the plant. Regarding the plant site and its vicinities, the results of the model showed that there is an important reduction of the current speed in the area occupied by each plant and its surroundings, however, in this area, significant differences in the impact were found due to the different vertical configuration of each plant.
