Abstract

1. The effect of feeding a-tocopherol (5 to 180 µg/g diet) for 24 days on the concentrations of a-tocopherol in various chicken tissues was investigated.

2. Tissue a-tocopherol concentrations responded to dietary intake in the order: heart =; lung > liver > thigh muscle > brain, and in all cases the relationship between the concentrations of dietary and tissue a-tocopherol was highly significant (0·997 ≤ r ≤ 1).

3. Plasma a-tocopherol concentration appears to be a good index (r ≥: 0.910, P< 0.001) of a-tocopherol status of lung, liver and heart.
