Abstract
Tom Varey originated the role of William Shakespeare in the RSC Hamnet, adapted by Lolita Chakrabarty from Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Hamnet and directed by Erica Whyman. The play premiered at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, in 2023 and transferred to the Garrick Theatre, London, in 2023-24. In this interview with Katherine Scheil and Edel Semple, Varey discusses how he conceived of the role of Shakespeare as subservient to Agnes, and how a female-led production provided the necessary emotional gravitas to the story.
