Abstract
The effects of the Bauhaus ranged across media as well as space and time. Part of the larger trajectory of modern art and architecture, from which they are not always easily disentangled, they had an impact upon everything from high art to hairstyles, helping to transform both in ways that the school's faculty and students could hardly have imagined. Despite the Bauhaus’ own firm commitment to internationalism, they could even be adopted to help re-brand entire countries intent on expressing their modernity. At the same time, as the case of design education in the German Democratic Republic reveals, its traces could, even when largely unacknowledged, still be discerned. More than a century after its founding, the Bauhaus’ effects remain ubiquitous.
