Abstract
Mary Murphy and Fiona Dukelow set the scene for examining structural change in the Irish welfare state in the context of crisis and austerity. The chapter reviews the challenges the economic crisis and the crisis response has posed for the Irish welfare state. It argues that the lens by which the crisis has impacted on social policy must be widened beyond retrenchment to examining how deep-seated structural change can alter the institutional make-up of the welfare state.
