Irish diaspora policy and soft power projection

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Diasporic engagement has not been a common aspect of Irish national projection but Ireland’s recent policy platforms have sought to activate diasporic sentiment in the service of soft power. A broader and more diverse construction of diaspora is put forward and a more nuanced Government of Ireland reach-out is directed at a wider range of global markets’ than has heretofore been the case. This reformulation of global Irish identity and diversified spatial projection of Irish interest points to an assertive spatialization of Irish themes in the global sphere as Ireland seeks to harness its diaspora in pursuit of soft power.
