Magdalene Master

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedings › Entry for encyclopedia/dictionary › peer-review

Abstract

This text offers a critical assessment of the anonymous artist known as the Magdalene Master (Maestro della Maddalena), positioning this prominent 13th-century Florentine painter as a definitive practitioner of the maniera greca during the late Duecento. Analysis focuses on his prolific workshop output and his key role in disseminating highly stylized Byzantine visual models across Tuscany, adapted to serve local devotional needs. Examination of his core surviving panel works—most notably his eponymous Penitent Magdalene and Eight Stories of Her Life altarpiece at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence and the Virgin and Child Enthroned dossal at the Yale University Art Gallery—illuminates his mastery of multi-episodic, didactic narratives. Ultimately, the text evaluates his vibrant use of linear definition, localized iconographic innovation, and deep integration into the early mendicant and lay confraternal patronage networks that preceded the formal breakthroughs of Giotto.
