Abstract
Nearly 3.96 million referrals allege child maltreatment each year with nearly two-thirds (60.6%) being screened for further investigation. In any given year, approximately 678,000 children and youth are identified as child abuse and neglect victims. This chapter will provide an overview of the child welfare process and highlight mental health and treatment considerations for youth involved in the child welfare system. A case example is used to demonstrate key concepts of mental health and treatment within the child welfare system.
