Abstract
From both the biological and engineering points of view, microbial inhibition kinetics is of importance and interest. To date, due to the complex nature of microbial metabolism and behavior, only unstructured models have been developed to quantify the inhibitory effects of substrate and end product. The exact form of the mathematical model varies widely depending on the microbial species, operating conditions, and medium status. This review assesses such models for representing microbial kinetics data. A critique of their applicability and limitations is also discussed in detail.
