MIGRANT CHILDREN AS CO-CONSTRUCTORS AND ADVISORS IN RESEARCH

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingsChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter interrogates children and young people's advisory groups (CYPAGs) in research. The use of such advisory groups is central to grounding the research in children's experiences and adhering to the spirit of Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). The authors explore the CYPAG role and contribution to high quality child-centered research as well as some challenges in achieving ethical and effective CYPAGs against the backdrop of the limited literature on children's research advisory groups. It arises from a large-scale research project examining the socio-educational integration of refugee and migrant children. The chapter describes the CYPAG role in co-creation of workshop methods and validation of key socio-educational integration indicators, piloting of questionnaires, data analysis, and dissemination of findings. The chapter concludes with reflections on the process from both the research team and the CYPAG.
