Monitoring and performance analysis of protection works at Rosslare Strand

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingsChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Post construction monitoring and performance analysis has become an important part of many major coastal protection projects. In the past such work was carried out very much on an ad-hoc basis with ill-defined objectives and little standardisation of methods. This paper describes a monitoring programme that was undertaken as a result of coastal protection works being put in place at Rosslare Strand in Co. Wexford, Ireland. The causes of erosion in Rosslare are first outlined along with details of recent construction works. This is followed by a description of the monitoring and analysis programmes. The methodology used for the collection and analysis of data is discussed as well as results showing the impact of the structures on the shoreline. General recommendations and guidelines are given for beach monitoring schemes. Predictions are made as to the future performance of the beach along with protection works that will be necessary.
