Abstract

This paper describes the system of education in Ireland, focusing in particular on the control and management of primary and secondary schools by the Churches. It chronicles the movement by parents in Dalkey, Co. Dublin in the early 1970 to set up a state-aided multidenominational primary school which would accept children of all religions and none and would be controlled and managed by a non-Church based limited company.

This paper was delivered at a conference in the Centre de Recherche sur les Ecritures de Langue Anglaise, in the Universite de Nice in 1996. It was subsequently published in a Special Edition of Journal Cycnos: Education et Religion dans les Iles Britanniques: Dieu à l'Ecole, Dieu et l'Ecole. Vol. 13, no. 2., 1996.
