Obama V Trump: The Politics of Presidential Legacy and Rollback

Abstract

When Donald Trump entered the White House in January 2017, he did so on an explicit promise to dismantle the work of his predecessor, making the Obama-Trump succession one of the most consequential and contentious handovers in modern American political history.
This book examines the Obama presidency and its legacy through the analytical lens of rollback, the systematic effort by an incoming administration to dismantle, reframe, and repudiate its predecessor's policy record. It establishes what can legitimately be regarded as Obama's domestic and foreign policy legacy before investigating how far the Trump administration, through its first two years in office, succeeded in reversing it. Drawing on case studies in health care, immigration, environmental policy, and beyond, the analysis moves beyond noise and hyperbole to ask a precise question: how robust did the Obama legacy prove to be in the face of Trump's challenge?
