Abstract
This chapter presents some context and a close reading of “On my antecedents”, which is one of five short texts written specifically for the 1966 publication of Écrits. Its position in the text - at the opening of Section II rather than at the very beginning of the book - is itself perhaps a witty comment on nachträglichkeit, that is, on the retroactivity so crucial in any psychoanalytic treatment, or analysis. Looking back from 1966, Lacan seeks to establish, retroactively, his formative influences in psychoanalysis and psychiatry, but also in the surrealist movement with which he was closely associated.
