Abstract
The concept of product properties allows materials to be engineered which combine different properties of the constituent materials. The material phase connectivity is crucial in determining its composite properties. Of the ten discrete diphasic connectivity patterns, this paper is concerned with materials exhibiting 3-0 connectivity; a discontinuous piezoelectric ceramic dispersed into a continuous polymer carrier matrix. 3-0 composite materials utilising modified lead titanate ceramic have been fabricated and poled. The materials exhibit useful levels of piezoelectric activity whilst being highly robust and potentially cheap to manufacture. A hydrophone has been constructed which exhibits very low acceleration sensitivity and flat frequency response over a wide frequency range.
