Pistoia Churches

This examines the ecclesiastical architecture and sacred topography of Pistoia, evaluating the structural evolution and decorative programmes of its major religious monuments through the analytical framework of medieval pilgrimage and regional identity. The contribution investigates the significant architectural transformations that Pistoia's churches underwent during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, a period dominated by the flourishing civic cult of Saint James and its accompanying influx of transient devotional populations. The text tracks how key sites—including the Cathedral of San Zeno, Sant'Andrea, and San Giovanni Fuorcivitas—integrated the distinct Pisan-Romanesque style to formulate a localised aesthetic vocabulary. Crucially, the entry evaluates how monumental sculptural features, such as the narrative lintels of Gruamons, were systematically deployed to articulate messages resonant with the pilgrim experience. By analysing the intersection of municipal religious practices, elite patronage, and pan-European pilgrimage networks, the work demonstrates how Pistoia’s sacred spaces successfully channelled socio-political ambitions whilst actively configuring the spiritual and physical itinerary of the medieval devotee.
