Polish encounters with the Irish foodscape: An examination of the losses and gains of migrant foodways

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

When Poland joined the EU a large number of Poles migrated to Ireland due to its then booming economy. Consequently Polish food is now firmly embedded in the Irish foodscape. The aim of this paper is to explore how food becomes meaningful in the context of migration. To do this I explore the various emotions around food that are stirred as a result of migration. This paper will draw on interview narratives to highlight the feelings of disruption and loss that are encountered through migration, but also the joy of finding familiar foods within a new context. Finally, I will explore the new possibilities with food that emerge as a result of migration. Overall, this paper explores the losses and gains that are entwined in the food culture of migrants.
