Prebiotic oligofructose-enriched chicory inulin combination with probiotics in the prevention of colon cancer in experimental models and human volunteers

    Abstract

    The main objective of the SYNCAN project (www.syncan.be) was to determine whether experimentally observed anticancer effects of oligofructose-enriched chicory inulin combined with probiotics were relevant in human nutrition. The preventive anticarcinogenic effect of prebiotics and synbiotics, but not of probiotics, was supported by results from a long-term experimental model. The human intervention study consisted of two groups of volunteers: (1) polypectomised subjects (at risk for colon cancer); and (2) colon cancer subjects who had undergone curative resection. It was observed that the synbiotic intervention improved the composition of the intestinal flora selectively. Various markers (reduced cell proliferation, reduced genotoxicity of fecal water, reduced DNA damage in biopsies) suggested a protective effect of synbiotic consumption against colon cancer.
