Abstract
This address provides an overview of the focus of the Educational Studies Association of Ireland since its founding in 1977. It outlines the links with other educational organisations in Ireland and internationally and emphasised the importance of the north-south dimension of the ESAI. The late 1980s and early 1990s had witnessed significant debate about Irish education and this Presidential address reflects the contemporary issues in education, north and south.
