Abstract

This essay was written in 1997 after the publication of the White Paper on Education which led to the passing in 1998 of the Education (Ireland) Act, Ireland's first comprehensive education legislation since the foundation of the State in 1922. The essay looks forward to the new millennium and highlights the areas of primary and second level education where change and reform will be required.
