Abstract

The field of probiotic research is poised to move from the realm of alternative medicine to an evidence-based therapeutic strategy for intestinal disorders, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, realization of the full potential of probiotics will require rigorous scientific endeavor, critical appraisal, and improved understanding of the normal flora. Genetically modified organisms will widen the scope of probiotic action and highlight the potential of therapeutic manipulation of gut bacteria.
