Abstract

Translation (the first in print of the entire text), with extended Introduction, of Ramon de Perellós's Viatge al Purgatori (1397). In this text, Perellós, a Catalan nobleman and courtier of King John I of Aragon (1387-13 96) recounts his journey to St Patrick's Purgatory (Co. Donegal, Ireland), undertaken in the winter of 1397 with the purpose of ascertaining whether or not the soul of his recently deceased royal master was in the way of salvation. Perellós's account of the other world is largely based on pre-existing texts, most notably the Tractatus Purgatorii Sancti Patricii of H. de Saltrey (c. 1180), but his account of Ireland, and particularly of the customs of the Gaelic Irish at the turn of the 14th century has been acknowledged as an important (and largely reliable) piece of historical testimony.
