Abstract
This chapter explores the geostrategic and historical factors that influenced European perceptions of Ireland. It argues that Ireland's proximity to and relationship with Britain was decisive when assessing Ireland's relations with Europe from the achievement of Irish independence until EEC entry in 1973. Ireland's decision to adopt a policy of neutrality after 1939 was also extremely significant in European eyes.
