Abstract
The IR spectrum of chlorine adsorbed on the silver(100) surface has been recorded using the new IR beamline at the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source: the performance of this facility in the far-IR region is shown to be comparable with the best that has been achieved in the mid-IR. An absorption band corresponding to the metal-chlorine stretching vibration was observed at 228 cm-1. Analysis of the intensity of this band indicates that the silver-chlorine bond exhibits significant ionic character, in agreement with recent cluster calculations.
