Abstract

A new mechanism for mode-locking in lasers is unveiled using a single-section quantum dot laser undergoing external optical feedback. A resonance between the relaxation oscillation frequency and the external cavity repetition rate promotes synchronization of many external cavity modes leading to a mode-locked pulse train.
