Rethinking the Early Pennies of the Monita Scorum and Sede Types

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

It is suggested that the legend MONITASCORUM, or variants thereof, on some eighth-century Anglo-Saxon pennies should be translated as '(in accordance with) the teachings of the saints' rather than as 'the money of the saints'. Similarly, the legend SEDE on some other pennies may mean 'Stay still!' rather than 'at the seat'.
