Salvation beyond the empire: Patrick, salvation history, and Ireland

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingsConference proceedingpeer-review

Abstract

The fifth-century writer, Patrick, stands out for his positive view of the Irish and acceptance of their Christian identity. Unusually, he did not see conquest by the Roman empire, or subjection to the civilising influence of Latinate culture, as a precondition of conversion. By setting Ireland’s history in a biblical context, he challenges enduring imperial and prevailing Christian views of the barbaricum.
