Abstract
Analysis of the microstructure of transparent, hot pressed 8. 2/70/30 (La/Zr/Ti atomic %) PLZT has shown a difference in grain size between the surface and bulk regions. Differences in optical behaviour during electrical switching showed that a change in chemical composition had occurred in the surface region during hot pressing, accompanying the change in grain size. The P/E hysteresis exhibited double-loop characteristics around room temperature, showing the existence of a field-enforced phase transition to a ferroelectric state. At temperatures above approximately 40 degree C, slim-loop behaviour was observed. The longitudinal light scattering effect diminished as temperature increased; the birefringence of individual grains showed qualitatively similar behaviour. Domain structure was observed in only a few grains at relatively high applied fields.
