Screening programmes for breast cancer

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingsChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Screening programmes identify people at risk of a health problem with the intention of commencing earlier treatment, where needed, to reduce mortality and morbidity. Focused on specific age groups, breast screening is offered in many countries and programmes differentiate between those at higher and lower risk of developing the disease. National breast screening has proven benefits, however, the cost to the exchequer is high and controversies exist. Costs and controversies likely result in some countries not offering a screening programme or individuals not participating in a programme where one exists. This chapter considers the benefits and limitations of breast screening programmes and highlights differences between countries in the provision of programmes.
