Abstract
Conventional broadcast modes of operation on optical networks cannot guarantee secured communication, therefore encryption may be required. Quantum cryptography provides a solution to this problem by exploiting fundamental physical laws to guarantee the secrecy of key distribution on optical fiber systems. Secure operation of a passive optical network is demonstrated using a quantum cryptographic key distribution system operating at a wavelength of 1.3 μm.
