Sensor fusion hardware platform for robust electromagnetic navigation

Abstract

This work explores how the Electromagnetic Tracking Systems (EMTS) can be merged with accelerometer data to detect and correct for metallic distortion in the operating room. Large metal structures in medical environments distort the magnetic fields used for navigation and cause errors in the reported positions. By merging magnetic measurements and acceleration measurements errors caused by metallic distortions are shown to be significantly reduced by up to 20mm in some case.
