Abstract
Charts the development of 'place' in academic libraries and in particular learning space design as an enabler and facilitator of learning. Outlines the changing relationship between libraries and their institutions, libraries and students, and libraries and professional support serivces, drawing on ntable examples of library designs and projects in the UK and USA. Also considers the collaboratins needed to deliver the 'library design continuum', pointing to the need to meet the diverse study requirements of students. The literature reviewed provides an overview of modern library environments that have learning at their core. Librarians are in a central poistion to influence theri institutional stratigies and place th elibrary even more firmly at the heart of student learning in higher education.
