Spinello Aretino

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedings › Entry for encyclopedia/dictionary › peer-review

Abstract

This text offers a stylistic and historical assessment of Spinello Aretino, positioning the late Trecento Tuscan painter as a vital transitional figure. Analysis focuses on how his oeuvre synthesizes the monumental plastic classicism of the Giottesque tradition with the linear, chromatic sensibilities of Sienese and Orcagnesque idioms. Examination of his major narrative fresco cycles—most notably at San Miniato al Monte and the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena—illuminates his complex cross-regional patronage networks and his role in configuring the formal pre-conditions for Early Renaissance narrative space.
