Abstract

A procedure for the design of continuous curvature waveguide bends, for use in integrated photonic circuits, is presented. The design employs the scalar finite element method and a technique for drawing waveguide bends based on their curvature. Waveguides designed by this new method exhibit a transition loss forty times lower than that of a standard waveguide bend. The transition loss of a waveguide designed by this method is independent of the length of the waveguide.
