Abstract

V1nyl1 dene copolymers 80:20 VDF: parael ectr measuremen The die1ectric and piezoelectric properties of fluoride (VDF) -trifluoroethylene (TrFE) with molar compositions of 56:44, 70:30 and rFE have been studied. Ferroelectric to c phase transitions have been observed by of dielectric constant as a function of temperature. The transition temperature increases from 70% to 121OC with increasing VDF content. Optimisation of piezoelectric coefficient with respect to poling fielu, on thin (30-80 fl) solvent cast films, produces d = d, values of 21 pCN-1 f o r the 56:44 VDF:TrFE copofimer, 17 pCN-1 for the 70:30 and 10 pCN-1 for the 80:20. The effecton the piezoelectric properties of ageing the films at 70% for periods of up to 24 hours are reported and a comparison made between the properties o f solvent-cast and pressed films. The potential of VDF:TrFE copolymers f o r piezoelectric applications i s discussed.
