Abstract

The growth and evaluation of large single crystals of a new piezoelectric oxide, tellurium (IV) vanadium (V) oxide (Te2V2O 9), are described. A full set of the coefficients of the elastic, piezoelectric, dielectric and thermal expansion matrices is presented, together with the first-order temperature coefficients of these quantities, where appropriate. A preliminary theoretical and experimental analysis of the potential of the material for surface acoustic wave substrate applications is given. Te2V2O9 shows low acoustic wave velocities, combined with moderately strong piezoelectric coupling, which could make it interesting for a variety of SAW and bulk-wave applications.
