Abstract
The Namurian succession (433m) of the Leinster Coalfield is described and subdivided into four formations, three of which are new. In ascending order these are the Luggacurren Shale Formation, the Killeshin Siltstone Formation, the Bregaun Flagstone Formation and the Moyadd Coal Formation. The extensive goniatite and lamellibranch faunas recorded indicate that an almost complete succession is present, ranging in age from Arnsbergian to Yeadonian with the Arnsbergian resting non-sequentially on late Visean limestones. Condensation rather than overstep may be responsible for the progressive southward thinning of the basal Luggacurren Formation. The development of the basin is discussed as are stratigraphical correlations with other Namurian sequences in eastern and western Ireland. -Author
