Abstract

A subjective survey was carried out to assess the thermal comfort perception of passengers of air conditioned cars in India. The survey questionnaire prepared captures data on the gender and age of the passenger, his/her seating position, perception about cabin air temperature, moisture content, air velocity, indoor air quality etc. The thermal comfort survey questionnaire is framed in Google forms and is shared through email and social apps across the country. A total number of 235 responses were collected within the given survey period. Survey results show that out of the total occupants, more than 70% expressed satisfaction with the air conditioning system, even though they aspire for better systems. during the months of summer season in India. An analysis of the survey results show that around 60 % of the passengers feel that they will be comfortable in the temperature range of22°C to 26°C. Though majority of the passengers seem to be comfortable with humidity and air motion inside the car cabin, there is some dissatisfaction in terms of stuffiness and sweatiness inside the car cabin, which need to be addressed through better air distribution systems. No major difference in terms of age group or gender could be observed from the survey results.
