Abstract

One objective of this paper is to study the possibility of predicting multicomponent (N ions) exchange from (N-1) isotherms for the constituent pairs. The second objective of this paper is to describe some applications of thermodynamics to ion exchange. Most of the previous work on this subject has been devoted to the interpretation of ion exchange as a chemical reaction. This paper introduces a new approach in which ion exchange is treated as a phase equilibrium using standard procedures developed for solution thermodynamics. Surface effects are accounted for by introducing surface excess variables similar to those used to measure adsorption from liquid mixtures on solids.
