Towards a politics of felt pulsation: De-disciplining voice and movement in the making of a musi-dance performance

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This article explores the making of a piece of performance which took as its core creative material the experience of heightened, felt pulsation in the bodies of the collaborating devisers. It moves through poetic and analytic reflections on the process and product involved with the work, and articulates arguments and suggestions about innovative ways the body might engage with performance and audience. It does this in light of the possibility that felt pulsation might become core thematic and technical material for communication of body states to and with audiences in both voice and gesture. Particular inspiration is derived from the work of Gerda Boyesen (1922–2005) and her theory of tissue armouring.
