Viral Intelligence: Generative AI in the Post-Neural Paradigm

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingsChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter makes the case that the neural network-based machine learning techniques underpinning GenAI extract a high cost from the environments, economies and sociopolitical systems in which they are embedded. This is experienced at the cultural level as the crisis of abundant saturation in artificial media. The chapter introduces Viral Intelligence as a post-neural framework for GenAI. Drawing on an analyses of this approach is manifest in Bacteriophage in Granular Waves, a generative audiovisual performance system, it makes recommendations for the further development Viral Intelligence into a fully-fledged alternative to address some of the negative impacts of associated with neural paradigms for GenAI.
