Abstract
Malignant melanoma is a serious public health problem world-wide, the incidence of which has increased dramatically in recent times. There have been a number of new developments in the diagnosis and management of this disease. This review article discusses the aetiology and surgical management of malignant melanoma, with particular attention to the role of sentinel lymph node mapping, improved detection of micrometastatic disease and the adjuvant role of interferon alpha. The combinant of sentinel lymph node mapping coupled with immunotherapy in node-positive patients may have potential to increase survival.
