Abstract
Richer & Fahlman (1988) proposed that six UV-bright objects they detected in the globular cluster M71 are candidate cataclysmic variables. We present the results of photometry and spectroscopy taken with the WHT which show that the two brightest of these candidates are likely to be hot subdwarfs. Although we cannot exclude the possibility that there are cluster CVs among the remaining fainter candidates, they are more likely to be white dwarfs and subdwarfs outside the cluster.
