Abstract

Despite the political centrality and symbolic importance of the UK-Irish border throughout the last century, its gendered impact, particularly on the everyday lives of women, has received relatively little attention. This research represents the first feminist sociological account of border life on the island of Ireland from the overlooked perspectives of women living in border communities. The Women of the Borderlands research project report highlights three key findings: 1) that the border is a significant structural feature of women’s everyday lives, past and present; 2) ‘The Troubles’, affected women on both sides of the border and impacted their daily lives; 3) the border is a site of gendered and racialised violence, insecurity and forced immobilities. Three research spotlights are featured in the report: Gender, Violence and Policed Mobilities; Women's Agency and Actions, and Racial Policing of Women at the Border.
