Research Profile

Diarmuid Padraig Ó Riain

Biography

I am a postdoctoral researcher on the Digital Atlas of Early Irish Carved Stone (DAEICS) project based in the Department of Archaeology. I was previously a researcher on the ‘Visions of Community’ project at the University of Vienna (2013-19), a Gerda Henkel scholar (2020) and a visiting fellow in Erlangen, Dublin (Marsh’s Library), Galway and Wolfenbüttel. I taught medieval history in Vienna for several years and have also worked extensively in the commercial archaeological sector in Ireland. My PhD (UCD, 2009) concerned the archaeology and history of the Irish Benedictine monasteries of medieval Germany and Austria (Schottenklöster). My subsequent research has continued to focus on interactions between Ireland and the Continent in the medieval period but also concerns hagiography and the cult of saints, manuscript transmission, and ecclesiastical history and archaeology. I have also been involved in a number of transcultural comparative projects and publications, including the recently published Medieval biographical collections: perspectives from Buddhist, Christian and Islamic worlds, which I edited alongside Daniel Mahoney and Giorgia Vocino.
