Research Profile

Aislinn Joy

Biography

Dr. Aislinn Joy graduated from UCC Medicine in 1995 and currently works as Lecturer in Medical Education at the School of Medicine, University College Cork (UCC). She has a PhD in Education for her research on how to support synchronous collaborative learning during distance simulations for health professions' education. Dr. Joy's research interests also include: innovating teaching and learning pedagogies (all contexts); Interprofessional Learning (IPL); human factors ergonomics for patient safety education & surgical practice; and themes within medical humanities. Dr. Joy is currently supervising three PhD students in these areas.

Current School of Medicine (SoM) Learning & Teaching roles include Co-Director of the Masters (MCh) in Surgical Science, Year 2 Coordinator for the Undergraduate Medicine Programme, and Chairperson of the SoM Graduate Studies Committee. Current Medical Education Unit (MEU) roles include Lead for Interprofessional Learning (IPL) and coordinator of 5 MEU modules (3 undergraduate; 2 postgraduate).

Dr. Joy has a keen interest in Curriculum Development. Her Case Study of Good Practice, which detailed the curricular development of IPL at the School of Medicine, was commended by a recent UCC Quality Review panel.  As well as supporting curricular review locally (medical and dental), Dr. Joy sits on programme accreditation/external assessor panels nationally (for the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland 2014-2019, and Medical Council Ireland currently). Reports from such programme accreditations in which she has been involved are available to read in the public domain.

Dr. Joy is also an active member of UCC School of Medicine (SoM), College of Medicine and Health (COMH), and university committees. She served on the UCC Social Research and Ethics Committee (SREC) for 5 years, during which time this committee received a UCC research award (in 2021) for creating a culture for responsible conduct of research.  Nationally, she has served as a volunteer member of the Executive of the Irish Network of Healthcare Educators (INHED) and has co-led the INHED Research subcommittee (2015-2020).
