Research Profile

William Hutch

Biography

Dr William Hutch is a practicing General Practitioner (GP) in Midleton and Lecturer in the Dept. of General Practice, University College Cork.

His special interests include 1. Neurocognitive Disorders such as Dementia, Stroke, 2.
Paediatrics, 3. Medical Education and 4. the application of medical innovation and technology to enhance these areas.

He completed his PhD in 2012, where the focus of his research was
to investigate individuals speech and language processing post stroke via neuromonitoring. This research involved a multidisciplinary approach including Clinicians, Neuroscientists, Engineers and Speech and Language Therapists to assist these individuals post stroke.  Post PhD completion he continued to work in multidisciplinary neurocognitive research projects at Irish Centre for Maternal and Child Health Centre (INFANT), The Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) and The Dept of General Practice, University College Cork. He has published and he continues to work in these areas, with a keen interest in bringing multiple perspectives to solve complex clinical/neurological problems. As a GP he gained membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners and further higher specialist training via a Fellowship in Dementia Palliative Care (through the
Irish College of General Practitioners), a diploma in Peadiatrics (Royal College of Physicians,Ireland) and Membership of Academy of Medical Educators post completion of Medical Education training at the University of Cambridge, UK. He is part of the Irish National Dementia Office (NDO) Working Group, which is focused on the “Implementation of National Clinical Guidelines on appropriate prescribing of psychotropic medication for non-cognitive symptoms in people with dementia”. His research membership includes European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN) and the World Family Doctors. Caring for People (WONCA) Europe.

Research Interests

My research is primary care centred with a focus on four key areas:

1. Neurocognitive Disorders: Dementia, Dementia Palliative Care, Stroke, Speech and Language Processing, Stroke, Brain Gut Axis
2. Paediatrics: (Neurocognitive disorders/ neurodevelopmental disorders)
3. Medical Education: Both undergraduate and post graduate levels in the areas of primary care, paediatrics and research methodologies.
4: The application of medical innovation and technology to enhance the above areas.
