Biography

I came to UCC in April 2010 after many years as a lecturer at the University of Birmingham, where I completed my PhD in 1997. My main teaching and research interests are in contemporary Hispanic Theatre and Performance, Translation Studies and Catalan Studies, but I've taught many other aspects of Hispanic languages and cultures over the years and am particularly drawn to the diverse instances of intercultural contact that characterise the Hispanic world.  I was Head of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS) from 2013 to 2017 and Vice-Head of CACSSS (Research) from 2016 to 2023. I am currently Head of SPLAS.

Research Interests

Translation Studies
In Translation Studies I have mainly worked on the translation and reception of canonical texts and on translation to and from minority languages. I have collaborated with other members of the Anglo-Catalan Society to translate key writings from Catalan to English and have contributed to collaborative projects with Angela Kershaw and Gabriela Saldanha at the University of Birmingham (on Landscapes of reception) and on Iberia in Translation with colleagues in the University of Lisbon. Together with colleagues in UCC, I have organised numerous events on translation and identity, including a symposium on 'Invisible Borders: Rethinking Translation and Minority' in 2011, a  workshop on Iberia in Translation on 1 March 2013, and a conference on Reencountering the Canon: Literary Translation and Contemporary Iberia in September 2016, and the 3rd Annual Conference of the Translation Studies Network of Ireland on 'Radical Translations/Translating the Radical' in 2023. I supported the creation of the postgraduate research training collective Project DARt and their 2019 conference on 'Translation and Performance: Translatorship' in the 21st Century. I am currently co-chair of the Translation and Creative Practice Cluster in CASiLAC.
Hispanic Theatre and Performance
I have contributed to numerous works on contemporary Hispanic theatre and performance, including the Cambridge History of the Theatre in Spain (ed. M. Delgado and D. Gies, 2012). However, my main work in this area has been on contemporary Catalan theatre, with numerous recent peer-reviewed publications, invited conference papers and translations, and on Spanish Republican exile and performance cultures. As a member of the Centre for the Study of Hispanic Exile at the University of Birmingham, I was a co-investigator on a British Academy-supported project on 'Exile Remains', directed by Professor Francis Lough (2008). I also successfully completed my own major AHRC-supported research project on 'Staging Exile, Migration and Diaspora in Hispanic Theatre and Performance Cultures' (2008-2010), which led to the publication of an edited volume on Stages of Exile (2011), amongst other outcomes. I was subsequently invited to be a co-investigator on Spanish government-funded projects on Spanish Republican exile theatre led by Manuel Aznar Soler at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.  I organised a workshop for a project on 'Travelling Theatres: Unsettling Identities' on 21st January 2013, and have since collaborating with the art therapist and object artist Sonia Boué Lora on recovering the "memory theatre" of her father, José María García Lora, and with my departmental colleague, Dr Cara Levey, on transatlantic transmission of trauma in performance. I am currently completing a monograph on Identities in Translation: Catalan Women Exiles in Mexico, with chapters on Maruxa Vilalta, Maria José de Chopitea, Maria Lluïsa Algarra, Remedios Varo and Anna Murià, and was invited to submit a chapter on "Memory Theatre and Performance" to a forthcoming volume on Memory Studies in the Iberian Peninsular for Brill.
Catalan Studies
As well as my work on Catalan theatre, I am strongly-committed to all aspects of Catalan Studies, and have translated contemporary fiction as well as The Book of Deeds of James I of Aragon (2003, released in paperback in 2010) and the pioneering Lesbian feminist novel, The Passion according to Renée Vivien (2020, with Kathleen McNerney). In early 2010 I completed work on a Historical Dictionary of the Catalans with Dr Elisenda Marcer of the University of Birmingham; in 2008 I co-organised a conference at the IGRS in London on Contemporary Barcelona: Visual Culture, Space and Power, which resulted in a co-edited volume for the University of Wales Press (2012). I contributed the Catalan content, and curated two of the chapters, in the landmark Modern Literatures in Spain for Polity (2022, co-authored with Jo Labanyi, Luisa Elena Delgado, Kirsty Hooper and Mari Jose Olaziregi). From 2012 to 2014 I was co-investigator on a Spanish government funded project on 'The Uses of History in Contemporary Catalan Culture', and I have subsequently collaborated closely with members of the Contemporary History department at the University of Barcelona on memory and commemoration in the Catalan-speaking territories.
